Preparing To Launch…Again

Southern Trout Magazine is well into its third year, a remarkable feat when you consider that it was a zero cash start up. The Lord has blessed us, and we know it and are thankful. The plan from the beginning was to build a family of magazines. In January we will launch Southern Kayak Angler and Southern Fly Fishing. Unlike STM that is bi-monthly, these will be quarterly publications. Each will launch has a digital publication, and if they are successful, they will be transitioned to print...Read more >>

OAKWOOD VA CLINIC HEALING WATERS -- AUG.

Reps from Foothills, Gold Rush & Rabun TU Chapters met with some Veterans at Oakwood for the first time on July 9th and again on July 16th.  We introduced ourselves and the program and had some folks interested in what we were doing.  Before long we were telling everyone that would listen about fly fishing and how we would like to get them involved.  We started tying flies and we had several Vets at the clinic jump in to see how they could do--it was a good time.
We will meet again on Wed. Aug. 6th at 10:00 AM and will be scheduled to meet each month on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays.
We will be casting & tying flies for a few sessions--and then hope to get out on the water and try to hook some fish--hope you will join us.

FISHING ON THE SOUTH HOLSTON--AUG.

Some of our chapter members just returned from a trip to the South Holston in Bristol, Tn.
After about a 4 hour drive we met up at South Holston Cabins and couldn't wait to get in the water.
South Holston is a tailwater &  known for sulfur hatches this time the year.  There were a few hatching on the first day we were there and we caught a few on small dries & even tried nymphing midges--but with not much luck.  We were at it again early next morning, but with the same results.
Since the generation schedule called for an hour of pulsing at noon, we hoped that the sulfur hatch & the fishing would be much better.  Our hopes were realized when the bugs starting rising in the early afternoon & kept on for the rest of the day--we remained in one small area of the river & hooked & missed a lot of fish--mostly beautiful wild browns.  This last day of fishing was a day that memories are made of--doesn't get much better--just wished I was a better dry fly fisherman.
This trip was part of our fishing outing program organized by Parks Davis--contact him at
pdavis41@att.net--go fishing with us--you will enjoy the trip and the folks who fish with us--thanks Parks for planning our fishing trips.
